Since the 2017/18 season, television funds have been distributed according to the so-called 4-pillar principle (source: DFL).

First of all, here is the overview of the national television funds in the 1st Bundesliga season 2019/20:

Distribution according to the "4-pillar principle"

According to the “four-pillar model”, the distribution of national revenues is as follows:

  • Pillar 1: “Stock”: 70%
  • Pillar 2: “Sustainability” : 5%.
  • Pillar 3: “Young Talent”: 2%.
  • Pillar 4: “Competition”: 23%.

This Article is only intended to deal with Pillar 4: “Competition”.

First of all, here is the overview of the TV Revenue Distribution 1. Bundesliga Season 2019/20 – Competition:

Calculation of the Pillar "Competition"

As in Pillar 1, the evaluation in the different table regions is based on a weighted five-year rating (5:4:3:2:1, starting with the last elapsed playing time).

In contrast to Pillar 1, the evaluation is based on a 36er ranking list.

In comparison to Pillar 1, other percentages per table position are also used.

The first six clubs (all Bundesliga clubs) in this column receive the same amount.

No Bundesliga club is classified under position 24 and no second league club under position 13, even if they would be ranked lower in the “actual ranking”.

For the first place in the 1.Bundesliga there are 36 points, for the last place in the 2. Bundesliga 1 point.

The value on the 34th match day always counts.

Example FC Bayern Munich 2019/2020:

  • 2018/2019: Rank 1 1.BL (36 points) times factor 5: 180 points
  • 2017/2018: Rank 1 1.BL (36 points) times factor 4: 144 points
  • 2016/2017: Rank 1 1.BL (36 points) times factor 3: 108 points
  • 2015/2016: Rank 1 1.BL (36 points) times factor 2: 72 points
  • 2014/2015: Rank 1 1.BL (36 points) times factor 1: 36 points
  • Total: 540 points > 1st place overall in the 1st Bundesliga
