UEFA 2020/21 revenue: How will it be distributed among the competitions?

Note: The figures are based on the currently available figures, i.e. before (!) a Corona reduction. The figures will be updated as soon as UEFA announces the latest information.

For the 2020/2021 season, UEFA expects revenues from the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup of approximately EUR 3.25 billion. These will then be distributed as follows:

Note: Of the 2.04 billion Euro pot of the UEFA Champions League, another 50 million Euro will go to the share of clubs in the UEFA Europa League, as well as EUR 10 million for solidarity payments to clubs which drop out in the qualifying phase of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League 2020/2021. In fact, the Europa League has approximately EUR 560 million at its disposal.

UEFA Champions League revenue: distribution of € 1.95 billion

The 1.95 billion euros are divided into the following 4 parts:

Note: The two clubs qualifying for the 2020 UEFA Super Cup will each receive 3.5 million euros. The winner will receive another million euros.

The winner will receive 2.7 million euros per match. The remaining amounts (900,000 euros per draw) will be distributed at the end to all participating clubs according to the number of matches won in the group phase.

Part 2: The Market Pool

This sum will be distributed pro rata to the relevant association according to the value of the television market represented by the clubs participating in the UEFA Champions League and then distributed to the clubs concerned. This means that the amount to be distributed varies from country to country.

The sum of the market pool to be distributed is divided into two parts.

Market Pool Part 1: 146 Million Euros (50%)

These are distributed among all national associations with at least one club in the group phase. However, not in equal shares but proportionally according to the respective value of the respective television market of the individual associations. Means: Italian clubs earn more than German clubs despite the equal number of participating clubs, since the value of the television market is higher.

This share is then distributed among the clubs of the association according to their performance in the national competitions of the previous season. The exact distribution within an association depends on how many clubs participate.

The distribution:

Third Place20,00%20,00%
Fourth Place10,00%

In Germany for example there were 4 clubs in the 2020/2021 season with Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Market pool part 2: 146 million euros (50%)

The remaining 146 million Euros are based on the matches played in the current Champions League season.

Also here proportional to the respective value of the respective television market of the individual associations. For example, if clubs 1 and 2 are eliminated in the preliminary round and club 3 wins the Champions League, the market pool is distributed as follows:

  • Club 1 and 2: 6/25 each (6 preliminary rounds matches/total matches of all clubs of the association) = 24% each
  • Club 3: 13/25 = 52%

Attached the calculation.

Note: We have taken the percentage values of the figures from 2018/19 (last published by UEFA). In other words, Germany had a total share of 11.8%.

Part 3: The Start Bonuses

All 32 participating clubs will receive a starting bonus of 15.25 million euros.

Part 4: The UEFA Coefficient Ranking List

The smallest part will be distributed on the basis of a UEFA ten-year ranking. Each share corresponds to 1,108,000 euros. The worst placed team receives a share, with an additional share for each rank. The best placed team with 32 shares receives 35.460.000 Euro.

Solidarity payments: This is how much there is for the clubs in the Champions League qualification in the 2020/2021 season

The clubs involved in the qualification phase, which do not qualify for the UCL playoffs (!), will receive a prize for each round played:

  •     Preliminary round – 230.000 Euro
  •     First qualification round – 280.000 Euro
  •     Second qualification round – 380.000 Euro
  •     Third qualification round – 480.000 Euro

Note: The 480,000 will only be paid to clubs that drop out of the league because teams that drop out of the league path qualify directly for the UEFA Europa League group stage and receive rewards above that.

The winners of the playoffs will not receive 300,000 euros, but they will receive payments for the previous qualifying rounds.

The clubs eliminated in the playoffs will receive 5 million euros. Strictly speaking, these are not solidarity payments. The winners of the playoffs do not receive this payment.

In addition, clubs that do not participate in the Champions League or the Europa League receive solidarity payments through their national associations, which amount to 4% of the total gross income from both competitions.
